EUROPE COLPBOL (EU-COLPBOL) is an Erasmus+ Sport project that runs from January 2021 to December 2022.
The project aims to expand on the potential of COLPBOL as a sport that promotes cooperation and inclusion at the European level. It is an innovative and inclusive sport modality that has been successfully implemented in Spain for the last 20 years. It is a collective sport that encourages the maximum possible participation of all the players whatever their physical abilities and motor skills and it minimizes individual differences, as it requires the collaboration and collective communication of the team in order to achieve the final goal of the game.
COLPBOL is defined as a “collective invasion sport played by two mixed teams of 7 players in a clearly defined space, the purpose of which is to introduce a ball into the opponent’s goal through hand-hitting”.
The aim is to create a dynamic, co-educational, inclusive and supportive sport, and at the same time promote fun and creativity. The two fundamental pillars of the game, which define its essence, are cooperation (it is an obligatory first-touch game) and co-education (it is always a co-ed game).
Based on its aforementioned characteristics, COLPBOL is a powerful tool for improving the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities (PwID) due to: (1) its simplicity in terms of technical movements and rules, which makes it easy to be played by PwID and, therefore, increase their involvement in physical activities by benefiting their well-being; (2) its ability to allow the involvement of people with different abilities, PwID can play with people without any disability, thus increasing their social inclusion.
By expanding the potential of COLPBOL to the European level, EU-COLPBOL will be a complementary and innovative training project, that will promote the transferability of a new inclusive sport modality from Spain to other EU countries, while also developing specific guidelines for the different stakeholders involved in the successful implementation of COLPBOL (PwID, sports professionals, and people supporting PwID) within a better quality of life approach. Additionally, it will strengthen the cooperation between entities in the field of sports and disability for integrating both points of view and for creating a multiplier effect at the local and EU levels.
